La dolce Vita: This wedding is set in a cellar somewhere in the western cape that we are transforming into a little european mountain village complete with a town square with water fountain and main road where th reception is being held. We have taken inspiration from Fellini movies such as la Dolce Vita and Cinema Paradiso. It reads like a story with a distinctive beginning, middle and end. Enjoy!
The scene: Post war Europe in a small mountain village
two young people fall in love. The
wedding is organized by the town’s folk. A wedding dress is sown by the older
women, a suit is ordered by post from Paris and the only motorised transport,
the mayors white Vespa is polished and cleaned for the couple’s trip from the
church to the town square. After the
church service the baker, butcher, and fishmonger lay out a festive market with
food for the guests in the town square around the fountain while crates of
champagne are broken open.
The main road in front of the only restaurant
is swept, cleaned and neighbours arrive with tables, chairs, flowers, table
cloths, candles. Dolores refuses to
remove her underwear from the washing line hanging across the street as she is
sure to have some customers tonight. The street is decorated with lights,
candles and country flowers and special permission is given for the street
lamps to burn all night. After feasting at the village market guest settle in the
street as the local band from the neighbouring town strikes up the music with
violin and accordion and the wine farmers bring out their best vintages that
survived the war. The restaurant throws
open its doors and the intoxicating smell of days and days of preparation and
cooking settles over the guests. A feast
of Bouillabaisse from Marseille, Cacciatore from the hills and forest around
the town and cheese from the Fromagerie has people eating too much and drinking
too much wine. The feast goes on long
into the night with dancing and singing as the band plays on. With the first light coming over the mountain
the street is deserted except for the priest singing and clasping a bottle of
champagne trying to find his way home.
